“You know I love you, don’t you?” Patsy asks a week later. They’re driving. Heading towards town. It’s three-thirty in the afternoon and they haven’t spoken about that night at all.

It’s almost like it never happened. It’s actually like they didn’t even meet up with his old boss and as for Patsy being spreadeagled between the two of them…

“I had the best time ever,” she continues when Andrew doesn’t respond. Just stares straight ahead at the road and grips the steering wheel. “And I think you did, too. So that’s why I just wanted to say. I love you. I know you still love me. And you need to know. What we did. It shouldn’t be a source of shame. I just wanted to make sure you understand that. Or you know, at least realise that I see nothing wrong with how you got off watching him slide inside me. And as long as I’m okay with it, then that’s all that matters, isn’t it?”

Convention and marriage vows be dammed?

Andrew nods. Narrowly avoiding the curb as his concentration wanders.

Normally such a careful driver, he feels like an idiot when a mother with a pushchair drags her child back from the edge of the pavement before glaring at him.

Patsy certainly chose her moment to start this conversation.

The one he’s been so carefully avoiding.

“You need to take a left here,” Patsy says, throwing him off balance yet again.

“I thought we were going into town?” he says, following her directions anyway and indicating left before making a sharp turn. This time he really does clip the curb when he misjudges it.

“Other side of town,” Patsy says, smoothing down her skirt and clasping her hands together in front of her. “Actually, we’re meeting Nathan. He wants to talk. About you coming back to work for him. He needs you, Andrew. And he’s prepared to offer you a very generous package.”

“I’ll bet he is,” Andrew murmurs, his mind going off in a completely different direction. The generous package in question? That most definitely involves eight or nine inches of prime flesh. Not to mention the biggest pair of balls Andrew thinks he’s ever seen.

Not that he’s ever seen that many.

“Wait… He told you about this. You? Not me? What? He couldn’t just pick up the phone? Man to man?”

“Well, if you answered his calls, maybe. But you’re screening him, aren’t you? He just wants to open dialogue, Andrew. And… like I said, I had a lot of fun, and you haven’t been happy since you left that place, have you?”

Andrew sighs. Not really. The whole obsession surrounding his wife getting railed by his boss aside, that job was his best job ever. He felt like he belonged. It felt like he was doing something worthwhile. Where he is now is just a grind and he hates it.

“Turn right here,” Patsy says, pointing to the other side of the road. “And you see the side road just on the left? Take that.”

Andrew does as he’s told. Turning right.
